France Bleu Dordogne reports that both villages saw their gendarmeries close last year, but now they have been welcomed by La Poste, not only to provide a local office but also a way to support the post offices themselves.
Gendarmes will be present at Saint-Alvère for two afternoons a week, while in Monpazier officers will be in attendance one afternoon a week.
A rental fee will be paid by the Gendarmerie de la Dordogne to La Poste and building work has been undertaken to ensure a private and secure entrance is available separate to the main post office entrance.
With public services being spread thinly, especially in the countryside, there are more and more instances of government services sharing offices to provide essential advice to local people.
