DESPITE recent strike action that hit rail pasengers, reforms have been passed by the French parliament that will change the railway system of the country.
Rail workers brought many services to a standstill last week, but it proved worthless as the lower house National Assembly voted 355 to 168 to support the reform that will see SNCF and track manager RFF brought together, as well as opening parts of the sector up to competition.
Some unions believe the reforms will just result in job losses, and ultimately see the French railway system continue to increase its debts, which stands at more than 40 billion euros ($54 billion) and is set to almost double by 2025 if nothing changes.
