ENERGY costs for the average French household increased by €200 in 2012, to reach €3,200 for the year and an increase of six per cent on the previous year.
Figures from the Économie et de l’Écologie ministry show that the increases were greater than inflation with one of the reasons given for the rise being that 2012 was cooler than 2011.
In total, French households spent around €91 billion on energy costs in 2012, which accounted for more than 8% of their total expenses.
And earlier this month it was announced that there would be a 5% increase in electricity bills from 1 August, which will be followed by a similar 5% increase on 1 August 2014.
