A STUDY claims that the contraceptive pill is the cause of 2,529 'accidents' due to blood clots and 20 premature deaths of women per year in France.
The report by the Agence du médicament (ANSM), which covered the years 2000 to 2011, found that although the risk of thrombosis illnesses is 'low', it was more important for women using pills of the third and fourth generation.
Of the 20 deaths a year the ANSM believes are due to the contraceptive pill, 14 deaths are attributed to pills of the third and fourth generation while six were associated with taking pills of the first and second generation type.
The different generation of contraceptive pills on sale in France applies to the date of their introduction to the market, with first generation pills dating from the 1960s and fourth generation ones from the year 2000 and onwards.
Figures for 2011 show that 4.27 million women in France take the contraceptive pill.
