THE military charity SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) Forces Help has an office based in Castillonnès, south west France, that provides practical, financial and emotional support whenever anyone turns to them for help.
Here in their Christmas message the organisation writes about their work and highlights some of the benefits of becoming a volunteer:
With the New Year fast approaching, many of us will be making resolutions to better ourselves in 2013.
But rather than suffer the self-denial of giving something up, why not pledge to make a positive resolution by volunteering to support former members of the Armed Forces and their families?
SSAFA Forces Help is the UK's leading military charity, working in local communities to help many people each year. SSAFA France works to assist former members of the UK armed forces throughout France, who need help. So far during 2012, we have managed to resolve urgent problems for 49 families.
We are a people charity and our work is done by trained volunteers. They provide the face to face contact to ensure that veterans and their families, young and old alike, get the support and assistance that they deserve.
The people we help can range from the widow of a National Serviceman to a young veteran of current conflict.
Volunteering for SSAFA is an opportunity to learn new skills and gain a sense of achievement. All our volunteers receive full training and are paid expenses.
