The figures released by the Ministère du Travail show unemployment levels at their worst since December 1999.
There is also a marked split between age groups, with those aged between 25 and 49 seeing a 2.7% increase in numbers out of work, however for those aged over 50 there has been an increase of 15.5% in the past twelve months.
Unemployment amongst men has increased by 3% in the past year, whereas for women the increase is 6.9%.
Employment minister Xavier Bertrand has said that job seekers will be supported through improvements at Pôle Emploi, with more done to support employers keen to take staff on.
