L’Oréal heiress Liliane Bettencourt is one of the sixteen business representatives who have signed an open letter published by the Le Nouvel Observateur website.
The group of signatories say they believe they have benefited from a French system and a European environment 'which we hope to help maintain'.
The pressure is on the French government to sort out its finances, especially after questions were posed about its deficit and the fear that the banking sector is exposed to bad debts across Europe.
The French audit court has said that a reduction of at least €67 billion in social benefits was necessary, whilst an additional €75 billion of unofficial tax breaks had to be plugged.
The petition goes on to say that those who have signed it believe it is only right they should play their part and contribute to help reduce the deficit which they recognise is a threat to the stability of France and Europe.
