FIGURES from the national statistics office INSEE show that 13.5%, or 8.2 million people in France, are considered poor i.e. living on less than €954 per month.
The figures date from 2009 and gone on to claim that half of French people lived on less than €19,080 per year, an increase of 0.4 % compared to 2008.
The economic crisis and rising unemployment is being blamed for the difficulties families are facing, and even those self-employed saw a drop in their standard of living, which fell by 0.8% (to €22,400).
