Maps published on the autoroutier de Bordeaux website show two options for crossing the river.
The first would see the Garonne bridged just south of Blaye, the second would see the road built off the current A10 autoroute, crossing the Dordogne and then the larger Garonne (click on thumbnail for larger map).
Both options would take the motorway to a point to the north west of Bordeaux, near Castelnau de Medoc, before heading south to the west of the airport.
The planned route would continue south and join the A63 and A660 to the east of Arcachon.
Many of the vineyard owners in the region were concerned that the motorway would cut through some of the most famous Bordeaux wines and began a campaign of opposition.
The autoroute website has even gone as far as producing a map combining the different vineyards with the proposed motorway.
