LOOK at that, I write just yesterday that this weekend is going to be a great time for French sport and the Tour de France self-destructs.
The credibility of the competition has been shattered with the news this morning that pre-race favourites Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso are out of the race.
Spanish investigators have named the pair, as well as other riders, in an anti-doping investigation, with the first stage around Strasbourg set to start tomorrow.
The T-Mobile team of Jan Ullrich have withdrawn him from the race, saying in a statement “new information has been presented to the Bonn-based T-Mobile Team, which strongly contradicts Jan Ullrich's… claims of innocence”.
The BBC website features former Tour de France competitor Chris Boardman who wrote that Ullrich being forced out of the race was a stain on the competition – and this was before the disqualification of Basso was announced.
