Spending on property overseas has increased by 45 per cent over the last four years and around 257,000 Brits now own properties overseas.
Spain accounted for 27 per cent of all second homes abroad, followed by France at 20 per cent.
The Social Trends report claims that British investment in property abroad now totals £23 billion and the appeal of a place in the sun appears to be spreading to younger people.
