NOW this is a smart idea from the city of Lyon, bikes you can hire for a short time and then pop back on the rack for others to use.
The city’s Vélo'v scheme provides 1,500 silver and red bikes that you can use in your travels around the city, 24 hours a day.
You register in advance and you are then issued with a security code and a prepaid card, which you can top up at each rack's computer terminal when you pick up a bike.
The scheme costs 5€ a year or you can get a week’s pass for €1, and your first 30 minutes is free, and there are over 100 racks available to drop of your bike after using it.
But the bikes are not your common or garden type, when you pop them back in the racks the tyre pressure, brakes and lights are automatically checked and if there are any problems a mechanic is sent out to fix and problems.
What a great idea.
