THE increasing popularity of garden swimming pools is being seen as a cause of water shortages in France.
The Independent newspaper says that France is only second to the US in the number of pools per head of population.
Following the heat wave in 2003, and the cost of inflatable pools falling, water use has increased and is having an adverse impact on many departments.
Although farming still uses the most water, as people’s habits change there is increased pressure on water reserves.
