ONE of France’s finest delicacies, the truffle, is at the centre of a growing crime wave.
The Independent newspaper reports on the troubles faced by truffle growers in the south of France who have faced shotgun-wielding thugs.
One farmer had a large quantity of truffles stolen, as well as the trees under which they were growing, when a gang hit his property.
"I heard nothing and I saw nothing, even though my plantation is only 50 metres from the house," he says. "Do you see over there, that hole in the ground?
“That was an oak tree, five years old. In another 10 years it would have been giving me fine truffles. They took 12 of my young trees and I don't know how many truffles."
And the problem looks set to continue as prices hit €900 a kilo, the number of farms cultivating truffles is falling and the demand for converting land to property increases.
