THE number of passengers travelling through the port of Dover fell by four per cent in the last quarter of 2004.
There were 3.1 million international passenger journeys through the port between October and December, but this was down on the same period of 2003.
The Department for Transport collects statistics on the number of passenger arrivals and departures to and from UK ports from ferry operators and agents.
Dover is the busiest UK port, with Portsmouth in second place however it saw a fall of 13% in passenger traffic for the same quarter.
In comparison during the same period there were 3.9 million passenger journeys through the Channel Tunnel, an increase of four per cent.
