FRENCH wine exports took a dive again this year, continuing a worrying trend for the industry.
The Federation of Wine and Spirits Exporters (FEVS) said that the amount of wine sent out of France fell 5.6% in terms of volume over the first eight months of this year compared with the same period last year.
In terms of value, between the period of January and August 2004, the export of French wine and spirits totalled €4.5 billion, which was a fall of 2.8% compared to last year.
Declining tastes for French wines abroad, particularly in the USA, has seen the export market face real challenges.
And with an exceptionally large harvest this year prices are expected to fall even further and calls for the industry to change its marketing methods are sure to increase.
The agriculture ministry estimates up to 25 percent more wine than last year will be produced.
