Since its inception. BBC TVhas produced amazing programmes – documentaries, dramas, classical music, sports coverage. Then there’s radio, both national and local. That’s on the domestic services which are funded largely by the TV licence fee. The Corporation has also led the way in broadcasting world wide, both in native languages and English language services. This is funded by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office through Parliamentary Grant-Aid. When that is cut, so are these vital language sections to countries who often rely on the honest BBC news broadcasts.
As a BBC pensioner, having worked in External Services, Regional and Local radio, I feel strongly that there should be no cuts in any way which fund this amazing Corporation apart from the salaries of some of the grossly overpaid TV presenters and others who should now be put out to grass – some with whom I worked!
I feel very strongly that it should remain a criminal offence not to pay the TV license fee. Claims that it targets the vulnerable are false; non-payment crosses all members of society.
The DCMS in government says – ‘it is clear decriminalization of TV licence fee evasion would have an impact on BBC funding.’
Perish the thought the Corporation would have to resort to trashy advertising or being a subscription service!
