Transport minister, Alain Vidalies, has said that the green light has been given for a €1 billion project to improve the country's roadways.
However, it means toll fees will have to rise over three years, from 2018 to 2020, and to pay for the work the cost of using the autoroute will rise between 0.3 and 0.4 percent.
Around 30 different projects are planned, including a number in the north west of France that many British people are likely to use when heading out of the Channel ports, with work expected to begin at the end of 2017.
