Lights out – France to force shops and offices to go dark overnight

Under the new law, which comes into effect on 1 July, lights in shop window displays will be turned off at 1am. Interior lights in offices and other non-residential buildings will have to be switched off an hour after the last employee leaves. Local councils will be able to make exceptions for Christmas and other special occasions, and in certain tourist or cultural areas.

Very sensible idea. The light pollution in the countryside is appalling.
Did I read recently about a similar proposal for street lights? The villages round us over the last few years seem to have been having a competition to see who can install the most lamp posts and I swear that our nearest village has more lights thaninhabitants and it's very rare indeed to see anyone abouit after 9pm, if not earlier, yet the lights seem to be on all night
