Largest shark sanctuary created around French Polynesia

FRENCH Polynesia has created the world’s largest shark sanctuary by banning the fishing of sharks in its waters.

Campaign group, Pew Environment, said the zone would cover 4.7 million square kilometres of ocean, this designation doubles the size of the area already protected by all six existing shark sanctuaries.

Each year, up to 73 million sharks are killed, primarily to support the global shark fin trade and one-third of shark species are threatened or near threatened with extinction.
