Same sex marriage and adoption set to be introduced

Same-sex-marriage-franceTHE Socialist government has carried through one of its election promises by saying same sex couples will be able to get married and to adopt under new legislation set to enter parliament later this year.

Justice minister, Christiane Taubira, told La Croix newspaper that the government 'will extend to members of the same sex the current arrangements of marriage'.

The changes would also allow same sex couple the opportunity to adopt children either as individuals or as a couple.

At present France recognises same sex civil unions that provide some benefits similar to those enjoyed by married couples.

La Croix is general-interest, Roman Catholic newspaper and the announcement by Christiane Taubira comes at a time when for Assumption, the church published a prayer saying each child should have a father and a mother.
