Using data skills to unlock stories of the Great War
THE WW1 Discovery project is an attempt to draw together the digital records produced by institutions who study the First World War and make them available online.
On the WW1 Discovery website you can learn more about the project and how it is hoped that in time new ways of visualising the war will be possible.
This is how the project team describe their work:
the WW1 Discovery project aims to make resources about the First World War more discoverable, and find new and innovative ways to present this content for the benefit of education and research
The first stage involves the collection of available data sources from museums and other archives, the majority of which are UK based, that can then be combined into a common format.
This will enable researchers, and eventually website users, to query the data from this collection of sources to find connections and links that otherwise may never have been seen.
There is still a few more steps for the WW1 Discovery project team to take, but their website has a blog you can follow and they are slowly drawing in more data for those keen to uncover the hidden stories of the Great War.
