Handy travel rights app from European Commission
IF you often fly between the UK and France, or other European countries, then a new mobile phone app may help with the legal side of things for flight delays and lost baggage.
Available in 22 EU languages, the Your Passenger Rights at Hand app is compatible with four mobile platforms: iPhone/iPad, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone 7.
At present the app offers information on your rights in Europe for air and rail transport then from 2013 it will cover bus and coach as well as marine travel, when these rights come into effect.
The app explains the rights of passengers, for example, if a flight is cancelled and the passenger is consequently denied boarding, they may be entitled to compensation of between €125 and €600.
If your luggage is damaged as a result of an accident, you may also be entitled to compensation.
And should you feel that your rights have not been respected, the app also provides information on who to contact in order to complain.
During a large-scale emergency, such as experienced following the Icelandic volcanic ash crisis in 2010, the app may also display travel information and advice from the European Commission.
