News stops: Energy costs hit record level

A MAN who attempted to rob a jewellery store in Paris has been shot dead by the owner of the shop.

The shooting took place in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, and it is believed the robber entered the shop himself armed, but was shot by the 60-year-old owner who drew a gun.

The shop owner has been taken into custody and police will attempt to determine if the shooting was done in self-defence.

Woman dies after Asian hornet sting
A woman has died in hospital in Bordeaux after suffering an anaphylaxis allergic reaction, which prompted an heart attack following a sting by an Asian hornet.

The stinging incident took place two weeks ago and the woman was being treated in hospital, but died overnight.

An Asian hornet nest was behind a door in the woman's house in Cap-Ferret, and she suffered one sting which caused the allergic reaction.

Cost of French energy bill breaks record
Energy costs in France totalled €61.4 billion last year, the majority of which was spent on oil based fuels, resulting in the the highest ever amount.

According to figures from the Ministère de l'Ecologie the steep increase has been due to rocketing fossil fuel prices, with average prices for oil increasing by 40% in a year.

Stolen Matisse recovered in US
A man and a woman allegedly tried to sell Matisse's Odalisque a la culotte rouge to undercover FBI agents.

The pair have been arrested and charged with possession of stolen goods, with the 1925 painting valued at approximately $3m (£1.9m).

Wiggins moves step closer to Tour history
Bradley Wiggins moved to within three days of becoming the first British winner of the Tour de France after successfully negotiating the final day in the Pyrenees and putting further time on his rivals for glory.
