Airlines excessive card payment surcharges brought to end

THE UK's Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has announced it has persuaded a number of airlines to include debit card surcharges in headline prices, and to make credit card surcharges clear and upfront.

Twelve airlines, Easyjet, Ryanair, Aer Lingus, BMI Baby, Eastern Airways, Flybe, German Wings, Jet2, Lufthansa, Thomas Cook, Thomson and Wizz Air agreed to make the changes.

Another airline, Monarch, made the move last summer when the OFT first announced its investigation into the airline industry.

Fees will still be payable when paying by card, but this will reflect the cost charged to the company for processing your payment instead of an over-inflated figure.

For debit cards, this charge should only amount to between 10 and 20p, while for credit cards the cost will equal a small percentage of the purchase price.
