Drop in on a Christmas market in France

CHRISTMAS markets in France have their own local touch and character and if friends are visiting they are a great place to pick up an ever so different present or two.

Many of the larger towns and cities run markets for a month, and you can be sure even the smallest villages will hold either a special market one weekend or invite artists to a fair in the salle des fêtes.

But if you are wanting to head to one of the bigger markets here is a quick list of some of those around France:

Christkindelsmärik, Strasbourg Cathedral
One of the most famous Christmas markets which Strasbourg promotes with special light shows and sees smaller markets pop up around the city.

Mulhouse, l'Alsace
Mulshouse is famed for its market and the special festive celebrations run from November 22 to December 30 with stalls around the Place de la Réunion.

Montbéliard, Franche-Comté
Archways of lights span the streets as craftsmen and women display their work from wooden stalls around St Martin church, the oldest Lutheran church in France.

Menton, Alpes-Maritimes
Down on the Mediterranean coast the seaside town of Menton you will be able to Souricette and Délicats in the Jardin des Délices alongside jugglers, musicians and of course Father Christmas.

Elsewhere around France there are large Christmas markets held in Caen, Lille and a number across Provence and the goods at all of these are sure to add a touch of France to your festive gifts.

Last year I went to the Christmas market in Besancon! A great city to visit, christmas present ideas at the market and lots of vin chaud on offer!

Samedi soir : commerces ouverts jusqu'à 20h30 - Parade Nocturne à 20h30 avec le Père Noël dans le petit train (départ place Notre-Dame) - Fanfare - Canons à neige et brûlot place des Jumelages avec vin chaud, marrons et bières chaudes (station d'arrêt pour le petit train)

CERIZAY : 20-21 décembre
12ème édition, les festivités débuteront le samedi dès 9h30 avec l'ouverture officielle du marché réunissant une quarantaine d'exposants (métiers de bouche et artisanat d'art). Diverses animations sur toute la durée du week-end : tours de poney, contes de noël, manège, crèche, trampoline, semi nocturne le samedi soir avec feu d'artifice à 20h. Magasins ouverts le dimanche, restauration sur place.
