Youth job law scrapped

PRESIDENT Jacques Chirac has announced that the controversial CPE employment legislation is to be scrapped, after weeks of protest.

Instead support will be offered to young people in disadvantaged areas, a similar proposition to that outlined following riots in French towns late last year (see Plans laid out to re-build).

Unions and students were delighted at the decision, claiming it as 'a great victory', whilst questions still hang over the architect of the law Dominique de Villepin, whose popularity has plummeted in recent months.
