A variety extravaganza of songs, sketches and monologues with an international theme; some new material, a few old favourites, all with the emphasis on fun and comedy.

There will definitely be a screening of Sherlock Holmes in English on Saturday 18th February at 2.30 p.m.

The Cinema le Foyer is a "not for profit" association, run by volunteers under the 1901 French law.

Literary Festival, St Clementin, 31 August, 1 & 2nd September 2012

There's been an active Writing Goup in Deux-Sevres for about 5 years, whose members include several published authors, winners of writing and poetry competitions. Exciting news from the group is that they are organising a Literary Festival in picturesque St Clementin, north of Bressuire, on 31 August, 1 & 2 September. Several well know authors, including Helen Dunmore, will be holding workshops, and any published authors, including French, will be promoting their publications.

Jocelyn Simms, one of the organisers, says 'we don't know of a similar event in France, certainly not in this region of France, although there are some well-known literary festivals in the UK.'

Parthenay Cinema - Puss In Boots and Mission Impossible 4 - last week January 2012

The latest news from Le Cinema Foyer in Parthenay. Chris says she is still working to get copies of Anonymous and War Horse - we have received the new Nicholas Cage film le Pacte / Seeking Justice which we will try to get screened early in February.

So this coming week we have

Puss in Boots at 3 p.m. on Wednesday 25th January and

Mission Impossible 4 at 6 p.m. on Friday 27th January.

Puss in Boots is the Shrek spin off for children of all ages: I saw it yesterday and there was much guffawing from the "grown up" audience.

One of the reasons I don't post a lot of What's Ons here is because, after several years of writing for newspapers in France, I have got very frustrated at the French attitude that they don't need to advertise events more than a week ahead - apart from the big annual concerts etc. The above is an example; this arrived in my Inbox half an hour ago!

Association Parthenay 2012 - Millescenie, July - volunteers needed

Driving round Parthenay recently, I've noticed posters in pink announcing 'En 2012,on y sera! If, like me, you've wondered what it is all about, well, here's the answer.

This year, the Association Parthenay 2012 intends to celebrate 1,000 years of the capital of the Gatine and the communes it encompasses - Millescenie will take place on 6, 7 & 8th July in the town. The Association plans to organise a grand 'spectacle' and on the evening of 13th January they held a meeting for anyone interested in taking part or helping. A friend and I popped along, intending to offer our services to help 'behind the scenes'.

Le Cinema Foyer, Parthenay - films coming up

First up is Real Steel:
"Set in the near future, where robot boxing is a top sport, a struggling promoter feels he's found a champion in a discarded robot. During his hopeful rise to the top, he discovers he has an 11-year-old son who wants to know his father. "
This will be shown at 2.30 p.m. on Monday 31st October and Thursday 3rd November.

On Tuesday 1st November at 8.30 p.m. we have the latest "Golden Oldie": Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, with Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman and Burl Ives: all seats 4€20.

Festival des Vendanges, Pamproux - 7-15 October 2011

Each year the commune of Pamproux, near Melle, organises the Festival des Vendanges, with exhibitions, a walk round the commune, and a soiree. For full information visit the Mairie website.
