17th & 18th July is the annual Festival of Peinture at Magne
The commune of Magne, at the heart of the Marais Poitevin, is a picturesque and colourful village at the best of times, but for a weekend in July it comes alive with the vibrant images of hundreds of artists, last year there were over 300. Not just local artists either, but from all corners of the hexagon and even further afield, including Holland and Britain. Every little space is covered with easels, parasols and palettes holding a multitude of colours as the painters jostle for the best view, or the most prominent position on which to display their creations. From beginners to professionals, young and old, the visitor can pause and watch a picture emerge before their eyes.
There are several different classes to enter, artists nominate a piece of work, and on Sunday afternoon at 3.30pm they will be displayed in the gardens of the Mairie, with the prize-giving at 6pm. The festival is open from 8 in the morning, all weekend. Get there early if you don’t want problems finding a car parking space.
No problems for disabled access. No problems for dog owners, just take some water, a bowl and a plastic bag.
